This shadow box represents the life of Arthur Flor, the red border is blood. He was locked up with Italian bars. The popsicle sticks in the back represents laboring, because he was in a work camp. The pigs are something he drew in the work camp. If you fold it together it makes a picture of Hitler. The name in the middle is his mother in law, because she was a famous spy for America and Italy during World War 1.
Sometimes the ones who died during the Holocaust were the lucky ones. Flor's story is just another untold story. Not much is known about his life. He never talked/couldn't talk about the horrific things he saw or did during the Holocaust. His mother in law was a famous Italian spy during World War One. She was supposed to be hung by the German army, but she was saved by British forces. When he was a young man Flor's village Cles, Italy was occupied by Nazi soldiers. The Nazi's took five hundred men from Flor's village, and put them all in a work camp. They all died because they were too weak, starved to death, or committed suicide. Only two men survived, and one was Flor.
In the work camp his hatred was so strong for Hitler, that he drew four pigs each shaded differently. When you fold the pigs together a certain way it makes a picture of Hitler. Shortly after the war was over, and Flor was released. He died of cancer shortly after the war. Flor is just another victim to add to the list. Another life lived in the shadows.
