This shadow box honors Irv Donick. There are many symbols in this shadow box. There is a clock in the background which represents the fact that he was starving in the forest and running out of time to find food. Also, there is a glass of water because he didn’t have fresh water to drink for half of his experiences in the Holocaust. There is a truck because he hid in one while going over the border of Czechoslovakia. It represents his time hiding from Nazis.

“Let us see what is in the back,” the Czechs said, “No, No, NO! A thousand times no!” said the Russian driver “ I tell you no one is there!” Irv Donick fidgeted nervously in the back of the truck. He leaned against his father, who was wearing a Russian colonel’s hat. The Czechs started towards the back. “NO stop!” said the Russian. The Czechs kept walking...
Irv Donick was born Radzivilov, Poland, which is now Ukraine, in 1937. He had a normal childhood with his father who was the leader of a Jewish organization and a store owner. Irv Donick was three when Germany invaded Poland in 1939.
When the Germans got to Radzivilov they immediately took all the people who could work and put them in two ghettos, Ghetto A, the working ghetto, and those who couldn’t work, such as the old and the young, went to another one, Ghetto B. Irv went to B. After six months, all the older Jews were rounded up and taken to the forest and killed. All four of Irv’s grandparents were killed. A couple days later, Irv’s father gave some money to some Poles to hide them. The were hidden in an attic of their home for nine months. Then neighbors noticed that the family was spending more money than usual on food. They told the Nazis so Irv’s family had to leave. For two months, Irv’s family lived in the forests with no food or water. They had to hunt to eat.
Then, Irv’s father found a woman willing to hide them in an underground chamber under horses. They lived there for nine months. Eventually the Russians came and rescued them. Irv was involved in an accident with a hand grenade that broke his leg. They stayed with the Russians until the Russians took control of the whole area.
They then went back to Radzivilov where they found that out of two hundred people in that town, they were the only people who survived. The Russian wouldn’t let them leave their control, but eventually they escaped and went back to Poland but were still in Russian control. They went to Krakow where Irv’s father went into the black market business. They tried to leave by dressing in a Russian colonel’s outfit and hiding in a Russian military tank being led by Russians who were breaking the rules because they were friends with the Donicks. They got to the Czech border where the Czechs tried to look in the back to see if they were hiding anyone. They engaged in a shootout after the Czechs headed towards the back and won, and escaped across the border. Irv and his family then went to Budapest, Hungary. Budapest was divided into two parts, the free part, and the communist part. The Donicks were in the free part. They decided to go to America because they felt that it was safer there. Now they just had to figure out how to get there. They took money and asked people to take them to Vienna and then to Germany where they flew to America. There Irv formed a successful podiatry clinic, while working at a restaurant.
